A Disability is the lack of ability relative to other persons who do not have impairments. Someone who is disabled may have a physical disability , sensory disabilities, cognitive disabilities, a psychosocial disability or other types of chronic diseases. A disability may occur during a person's lifetime or may be present from birth.

Persons with disabilities are treated medically with a focus on how they could function better. Current issues of disability and people with disabilities include social and political rights, social inclusion and citizenship. The effort to find effective ways of ensuring that people with a disability can participate in and contribute to society in all spheres of life is an important goal of the American Disabilities Act, that s also known as the ADA.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) came in to effect in 1992. It stricly prohibits private employers, state and local governments, employment agencies and labor unions from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities in job application procedures, hiring, firing, advancement, compensation or job training. This includes organizations like retail stores, movie theaters and restaurants. They must make reasonable accommodation to people with different needs. Protection is extended to anyone with (1) a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of an individual (2) a record of such an impairment or (3) being regarded as having such an impairment. The second and third critiera are seen as ensuring protection from unjust discrimination just because someone has a record of impairment or appears to have a disability or illness.
